We are now navigating parenthood all while enjoying life. Follow along to see how we conceived our son, our relationship with the donors and how we raise our son to know his story. clover716http://www.blogger.com/profile/00397011406860776011noreply@blogger.comBlogger41125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3619572320340300603.post-35060240341059233372019-06-29T16:21:00.000-04:002019-06-29T16:21:38.736-04:00Our Future A lot of people ask me about the future of our Embryo Donation, questions such as- “what will you tell Brian?”, “How often do you plan to see the donor family?”, “Are you scared to have a relationship with them?”, “What do you call them?”, “Will you have more children through Embryo Donation?”.

Yes, these are all personal questions, but I have shared our story so publicly, so people are curious, I get it. I will do my best to address them and discuss our experience so far, but remember that it is only my experience that I can comment on, I imagine everyone has a different experience.

First and foremost, Brian will always know his entire story. I began telling him in the womb and continue to do so everyday. There is a lot of research out there that explains donor conceived children should be treated the same as adopted children, in order to avoid any confusing feelings of betrayal, it is best to be honest, tell them all the time how much they are loved and how much they were wanted. Brian’s story is one of so much love, we wanted him so much that we did all we could to bring him to the world, his donors loved him so much they wanted him to have a life, his brothers already feel such a strong connection to him, he has more extended family that loves him so much, we have become one big, blended family.

That will be the emotion behind Brian’s story, but yes as he develops specific details will be shared. We already read him a great book called “The pea that was Me” by Kim Kluger-Bell. I read this to him in the womb, and we read it at least once a week now. His brothers also read the book. It basically describes Embryo Donation through a family of peas, it uses language such as “sperm and eggs”, but at the same time explains it very simply to a child that a very nice family gave another family a pea since they couldn’t make their own, with the help of a Doctor, this little pea grew into a baby and then a child. This is just one example of books out there, we own a few and will always read them to Brian, answering any and all questions that we can.

As for our relationship with the “donors”, that has blossomed into a beautiful relationship. This happened naturally and organically. We made a legal agreement that only states we need to communicate about medical issues. We talked about our hopes and dreams for the future, and when they were the same, we decided to leave it up to faith where life will bring us, we didn’t need a legal agreement to feel the love we have for Brian and his brothers. We all knew that we would do anything we could to foster the relationship between the brothers, that being the most important aspect to all of us. The rest fell into place. Becky (donor mom) and I grew close over the entire ivf transfer and pregnancy, she became more than a friend, I could always feel her true love and support and knew it was genuine.

We met Becky, Jim and the boys face to face in September 2018, when I was 20 weeks pregnant. We immediately hit it off, sharing stories, bonding with the kids, eating and relaxing together. Our relationship continued to grow the rest of the pregnancy and we even FaceTimed the whole family from the hospital room showing them Brian. We didn’t “need” to do this, but wanted to, these very generous people have become our family too. We continue to talk often, FaceTime with the kids, share pictures and videos.

In June 2019, for Fathers Day, we all got together and Brian met his brothers. It was magical. The boys were immediately connected to Brian, so excited to see him, loving on him, talking to him, shared toys and were so happy. Through the books they read, they are able to understand that Brian is their brother but lives with us. I’m sure there will be questions along the way, but for now, they are aware and content with the information provided. They called us family and we’re already talking about seeing Brian in the future.

As for the adults, we grew even closer, recognizing what a special bond that has bought us together. It filled all of our hearts to see the boys together, watch the older boys give Brian kisses, pat his head and show him so much love. Becky and I talked about it, she expressed that she was surprisingly really ok and happy with the entire outcome, she didn’t feel any connection with Brian in the sense that it was her son, more that a good friend had an adorable baby. She later expressed that she couldn't have dreamed of a better home and family for Brian.

I’m sure there will be many more emotions that will come during different moments in Brian’s life, but again for now, we are all content with where we are as a family. We have discussed celebrating a holiday together, and have plans to meet at the beach in August.

As for adopting another embryo, Chris and I are content and feel that our family is complete at this point in time. We have no plans to go through any IVF process again. If we are blessed with some sort of a miracle along the way and I was to get pregnant naturally then we would be more than willing to love and raise that child, but have no intentions of trying to get pregnant, we just want to live our life as a happy family of 3!!!

I do believe that this was our path all along, I have always had this intuition that I would adopt, but I also wanted to carry a baby, it’s crazy how it all fell into place and worked out better then I could have ever dreamed of.

There is not one little tiny of piece of me that doesn’t feel like Brian’s Mama. I know so many people are scared that you won’t feel a bond, or won’t love the child like it is your own- but to me, he is my own. I already see expressions that are all me, and our bond is undeniable. This is the same for Chris, I know a lot of men are concerned about these feelings, I have asked and talked with Chris about it, but it’s clear to me every day how much love is between him and Brian. Again, this is only our experience, but Brian is our son, he will absolutely know that he has different DNA, but DNA does not define you or make a family. There are all kinds of families out there, I know ours is unique but I wouldn’t change a thing about it.

On a whole other note.... a lot of people have been trying to convince me to write a book... I would love to, but have no idea where is start!!! Anyone have experience? Know an editor or someone that you can connect me with?clover716http://www.blogger.com/profile/00397011406860776011noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3619572320340300603.post-14017802093652998842019-04-30T16:27:00.000-04:002019-10-27T21:22:45.770-04:00Full ABCnews Documentary The full documentary that was filmed by abc news was released in April 2019.

It was so great!!!

While it was really hard to watch myself on camera especially during the most difficult time of my life, it was worth it to bring awareness to infertility and all that us warriors go through.

Check out our story and 3 other families as we fight the fight for our babies.

Its called Modern Baby, you can watch online or Hulu.
We were never really sure what it would lead to so we didn’t share much except with close friends/family.

Well it appears that the time has finally come, ABC Nightline covered the story on their show on March 28th 2019. This is a 30 minute show, doing a much shortened version of our story as well as other families going through the struggle of IVF. The full documentary will be released at a later time.

When I decided to share my very personal struggle with all of you through my blog it was very much for me and to help the people around us understand our struggle. To my surprise, people became involved, people truly reached out to me, encouraged me and asked me to continue sharing our story. Along the away it became about awareness for myself, others struggling and the world of IVF, which has had its stigmas over the years. I made it personal for people instead of a “science project”.

So when we were presented with the idea of sharing our story to an even more public audience we decided this must be part of our path, a way to give our journey and even bigger purpose. It was difficult to share really hard times on film, but I’m also so proud that we were chosen to tell our story and help the world see what families are struggling with behind closed doors.

You can watch this episode (Modern Baby) on demand by clicking the link below or stream it on Hulu (under the TV show Nightline, episode called Modern Baby).
I told Chris in the recovery room, all I remember feeling was love from all around. The nurses, anesthesiologist, Dr Perkes (our amazing OB), Danielle and of course Chris had so much love in their hearts and talked to me the whole time about my son. It was more than I could have ever hoped for.

We arrived on Tuesday 1/22 evening around 5pm. We’re immediately brought to a delivery room, hooked up to machines and began talking about the induction process. Dr Perkes called the room to comfort me and reassure me that he shared all my information with the on-call Dr and that she would take care of me until he arrived in the morning. We decided to start with a drug called Cytotec that would help soften my cervix and shortly after a foley balloon catheter would be inserted into my uterus to force dilation to 4 cm. Honestly, in all that we have been through this was one of the most painful things I have yet to experience. So much that Chris almost passed out from watching me in so much pain. I kept this catheter in for over 12 hours, between that and the meds it was forcing me to contract ever 2-3 minutes all while trying to sleep to prepare for actual labor. I finally called for some pain meds in the middle of the night to try and sleep. They ended up making me a little silly, I laughed uncontrollably for about 10 minutes before passing out for an hour.

At 8am, the nurse came in and said “let’s get ready for a baby”. I was filled with hope and excitement, as well as fear but she reassured me that everything was going to work out. She forced me out of bed to brush my teeth, and began repositioning my hospital bed into a position to help force the baby down. We tried so many positions through out the day. Dr Perkes finally removed the catheter and checked to see how dilated I was, only 2 cm... so we began more medicine that would make the contractions more frequent and more intense. 6 hours later...still at 2cm and my little love still wouldn’t drop. This happened a few more times and I began to feel defeated with exhaustion. Chris kept me comfortable, massaging my legs, telling me over and over how proud he was of me and the room remained filled with love and positivity no matter how I was feeling.
At the last check, I was still 2cm and contracting every 2-3 minutes for nothing to be progressing. Chris and I decided the best decision for us and our son was to move forward with c-section, we were both terrified of a major surgery, but we trusted Dr Perkes with everything that we have and knew he was the one meant to bring our son to the world, we told him our decision and reassured us that it was the right one. A few minutes later we were dressing for surgery and walking down the halls to the OR.
We helped bring some awareness to this very important issue of infertility. Our story ends happy, but many do not, we are very aware of this and count our blessings every day. Head over to their site to see our story (much more pictures) and many more stories that are worth hearing.

Sorry it’s been so long. For some reason this was an area that I struggled in during my pregnancy. Writing about it, made it real on another level than was just too much for me to process at the time. Which is kind of strange when I look back and reflect on it, because most days I felt good- positive and hopeful, but for some reason I couldn’t find the energy to write about it. Maybe it was because I was actually in a happy place instead of a fearful, lost place. So for my readers that are still in that place, I hope that one day you become so happy that it’s hard to go back to those feelings.

I will start by saying- I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy in January 2019. So don’t worry that I’m back writing because something terrible happened, just the opposite, I wanted to make sure I came back and continued my story for those that are still struggling and looking for that hopeful, happy ending. Well I’m here to tell you that it is possible, this is not to say that it wasn’t a really, mentally/emotionally exhausting struggle, even my birth and pregnancy came with struggles, but in the end it was all absolutely worth it!

It was just as terrible. It was a Saturday night, so it landed us in the ER. We were there for a few hours and had to wait that whole time to know that our baby was okay! It was torturous!!! The radiologist is not allowed to say anything and she didn’t even turn the volume on so we couldn’t hear a heartbeat. Chris was so upset he got up and looked at the screen himself- thank God he told me he saw a heartbeat (radiologist was not happy but oh well!!) The Dr finally came to say that once again the baby was perfect and there was no explanation for the bleed.

Are. PregnantI am so sorry it took me so long to update my blog, but something just didn't feel right about sharing our news and all the details until now.

I will start way back from the beginning as I know a lot of my TTC sisters want to know all the details, but the one thing I hope you take away from this, is all the things we did to advocate for ourselves before the transfer. Trust YOURSELF! Do research, read other stories and ask questions!

TWW (two-week-wait): Honestly I hated reading this answer but I felt NOTHING!! I really did not believe it had worked at all. I had sore boobs, but I had that from the hormones before the transfer. I tried to stay positive, but I really wasn't deep in my heart. I was fully prepared for the worst phone call of my life, which turned out to be the best phone call of my life! So hang in there, do whatever feels right, feel whatever you need to, just get through the wait.

May 30th was the day we got the call to say we were pregnant, our transfer was a success. My beta number was 63, not the greatest, so even though I was so happy, I was terrified of what would happen next. It was hard to let myself feel all this joy, when I knew there was a good chance the beta could go down in 2 days. But it didn't, it almost doubled to 118. Still I was cautious... but very happy. The next beta was 3 days and we jumped to almost 500 and then the last one was over 1,000. We officially made it through the beta hell. I finally started to believe this may actually be happening.

Then on 6/11, a Monday, I was at work feeling great. I went to the bathroom around 11:45 am and there was a lot of bright red blood when I wiped. I instantly lost my breathe and began to freak out. I ran back to the classroom I was in, grabbed my stuff and tried to tell anyone what happened, but at this point I was already hysterical. I ran out the door and called Chris- he answered immediately and I couldn't even get any words out, just blood. He just went into panic mode but did his best to calm me down, he helped me start breathing and we both left work and drove right to the Dr. It was a 45 minute drive of terror, I cried hysterical and begged for this to not be happening, while Chris just told me over and over again how much he loved me. When we got to the Dr I didn't even want to go in but Chris forced me, I didn't want to face what I thought I knew. In all my times going to the Fertility clinic, I have never cried there like this. Luckily, they are amazing and took me right back with lots of hug and consoling. They told me to try and relax and get on the table. The PA came in and immediately did an emergency scan, and there was our little guy. Honestly, I couldn't even look, but she and Chris kept telling me to look they could see his little heart fluttering!!! I finally looked, he was there, he was sooo tiny, but strong. His heartbeat was 108 at only 6weeks. It was amazing. She didn't see anything else going on in the uterus, no cause for bleeding. When she took the wand out there was barely any blood. What a relief. I took the next day off of work and nothing happened. I went back to work on Wednesday and right around the same time it happened again. This time I stayed much calmer but still left work. I want to be clear, a lot of people spot in their pregnancies and it is totally normal, however it is typically brown or prink blood and just a tiny bit. This was more than that and bright red- like a period. However, there was no obvious cause for mine. We decided to stop baby aspirin as I was also on a blood thinner to see if that would help. I also put myself on a modified bed rest for the rest of the week and weekend. It never happened again. My gut tells me it has something to do with work, I sit in very small chairs with preschool children, I believe that I was basically doing 100 squats every morning which may have been just too much for my body at that time. There is no scientific evidence for this, but when I went back to work I sat in adult chairs, preferably more comfortable ones and I was feeling much better.

On 6/20 we went for our regular scheduled sonogram. I couldn't believe how much our little guy had grown! He was still so strong with a heart beat of 146. He measured perfectly and I was falling more and more in love with him. We were now 7w2d pregnant and due in February 2019.

We waited another 2 weeks to see our little guy. He was so much bigger and moving all around. He even waved his hands in the sonogram. His heartbeat was fast at 188 but he was just perfect. I was and am still feeling great. No illness and really no symptoms at all. Still have sore boobs and the only noticeable difference is the amount I am hungry. I wake up early from my stomach growling and need to eat much more during the day, but I am able to eat all things and mostly keeping it healthy. At this time we were 9w2d pregnant with our son. Our RE recommended that we start weening off hormones and meds at this time, but we just weren't ready. We asked for more time, basically we were terrified to change anything.

During week 10 we saw an MFM (Maternal Fetal Medicine) Dr. She was very nice, but to the point. She did a sonogram and told us our little guy was doing great, strong heart beat, active and measuring perfectly. She confirmed that it was ok to start weening off the supplements. She recommended staying on the blood thinner, since I was already on it and it will be no harm to me or baby. After meeting with her, we decided to stop the PIO shots at night and increase to 3 a day progesterone inserts, this was the RE's recommendation.

This week I am honored to say that I am 11 weeks pregnant. We had one last sonogram at our fertility clinic. Our son is just perfect. He was dancing around the whole time. He is super active and strong. He is still measuring perfect and has a fast heartbeat of 180. We have officially graduated, meaning that we are moving forward and seeing a regular obgyn next week. We have stopped all estrogen supplementation, decreed progesterone to 2 pills a day and weening off the dexamethasone by taking it every other day. By next week, I will be off all these hormones and medicine. The only thing I will continue to take is the blood thinner. I will also be having another intralipid infusion in August.

It is a very bittersweet feeling. I am so grateful for everyone at our clinic and for how far we have come. I never knew what this would feel like, I'm full of love, hope, and joy. I wish everyone could experience this, but I know that is not always the case, I am very aware that we are crossing over to the "lucky" side.

Here are all the specific details of what we did this cycle ( you can also read more details in previous posts) I will star the things that are different this cycle. I do not believe it was one particular thing that made this cycle successful, but I do feel that my surgery to remove my infected tube played a large role, as well as being patient with my body and trying some new medicines that wouldn't hurt.

Things I did the entire cycle:
*Chiropractor (fertility)- saw her 1 times a week
Acupuncture- 2 times a week and before and after transfer
*Took a prenatal with FOLATE- Emerald Laboratory is the brand I chose.
*Took DHA Omega gummies

Protocol:
Estrogen for 6 weeks- was increased to 3 patches a day and 3 vaginal inserts (read other posts)
*dexamethasone 0.5mg beginning with Estrogen
baby aspirin starting with Estrogen
PIO shots, 2 inserts a day and *Lovenox (blood thiner) beginning 5 days before transfer
*Intralipid infusion 1 month before transfer and 1 week before transfer
doxycycline for 5 days leading up to transfer

I continued all of the above meds (except doxy) until beta day and then after.

Other things during the TWW:
I was on bed rest for 2 days- I did walk around the house, but nothing crazy.
I ate only warm foods, including room temperature drinks for 5 days. And after that tried to avoid freezing cold things until beta.
I drank a pineapple core crushed up with warm water for the day of transfer and 2 days after.

I know I said above that I felt nothing during the tww and its true but I did have 2 bizarre things. 2 days after the transfer I wet the bed in the middle of the night- never have I done this. Turns out I had my first ever UTI, I ended up having to take antibiotics. When they tested for it again right around the beta, I now had a yeast infection... so I have no clue if this was all related, but it was new and unusual for me!

My weening progress:

10 weeks stopped PIO cold turkey, but increased to 3 vaginal supplements a day.
11 weeks stopped estrogen cold turkey, decreased to 2 progesterone inserts a day, and dexamethasone every other day.
13 weeks last intralipids infusion
staying on Lovenox until some times later in pregnancy

Here is a picture of our little guy. I truly hope you get to experience this. If you are struggling the best advice I can give is, don't give up on yourself. Stay open minded, get help, research, try new things and remember to try and love yourself through the hard times.

We transferred our sweet little boy yesterday. We are filled of love, hope, fears and faith. And now all we can do is wait!!!

Yesterday, was amazing!! We were filled with so much joy and positive vibes. We were sent so many messages from people that have been following along our journey, wanting to send us good luck and positivity. We received text messages, Facebook messages, calls and even care packages in the mail. This is what makes it all worth it. Our little guy is so loved already and the fact that I know we have so much support and love surrounding us, makes our struggle just a little bit easier.

The actual day began with me waking up super early. I have been experiencing some discomfort in my vaginal region, sorry that is TMI, but its part of the story, besides the 2 daily injections I have to take, I also have 5 vaginal inserts a day... so needless to say it can be very uncomfortable. I think this time around it is so much worse as I have been on the hormones for so long and the weather is hotter and more humid... so anyway, I decided to get up and soak in the bathtub for the last time, hopefully for a very long time (Can't take any after transfer and while pregnant). I decided to meditate in the tub, it was very relaxing and a nice moment to myself. The affirmation that I remembered the most from my meditation was "My body is ready, just like every Mother's is", I found myself repeating this all day long.

Next I got dressed, had a great breakfast with my husband and planned out our schedule of the day. I went to acupuncture, where to my surprise with all that was going through my head, I still fell asleep. I came home and picked up Chris and off we went to make a baby!

Arriving at the office is always stressful.... the waiting to confirm that the Embryo thawed out is literally the hardest feeling to deal with. Chris and I just sat holding hands without saying anything as we knew we were both scared but didn't even have the nerve to discuss it. When we were finally called into the Doctor's office and saw our little guy in his First picture, we breathed a sigh of relief! He was perfect! No seriously, he was graded almost at Excellent, but completely perfect. We discussed all the details of what would happen next, took my valium and then off to the waiting room again.

We were then called to back to begin getting prepared. I was greeted by many hugs from the nurses and lots of well wishes. I changed and Chris got dressed up in his gear. We were brought into the room and the procedure began.

Even with the valium the pressure was unbelievable. I winced and squeezed Chris's hand. Remember how sore I am in this region and you need a full bladder for this procedure. But it was all worth it. Dr was able to enter my uterus easily and the Embryologist brought in our little guy and he was pushed into me. We got to see the whole thing on the screen. Watching Chris's face is something I will hold in my heart forever.

My Dr is amazing and drained my bladder for me to relieve some pressure. Then he and the nurse fixed me up with some warm blankets, propped my hips up and left us to rest and relax for 30 minutes. We laughed, I cried a bit and kissed each other. Remembering how much we love each other and hopeful this is our time to make a baby. We are officially PUPO!!! We are pregnant until proven otherwise!!

Now I have 2 days of bedrest, staying warm which includes eating and drinking warm foods, relaxing, drinking crushed up pineapple core for 3 days and laughing...

Please let this little guy stick!!!
Where is my lining? Where are my E2 (estrogen) levels? We were anxious to see what could this mock cycle mean for our future.

To our surprise, my lining had improved to an 8mm and my E2 levels were in the normal range but decreasing instead of increasing. We decided to meet again next week and see what we would like to do and he said we could possibly continue on the meds and transfer in May... we had no idea this was even possible!! So the rollercoaster continues.

May 7th- We met with the Dr again and my lining was continuing to thicken, almost 9mm, however the E2 declined again... I don't know what is happening!!! i have researched this, asked other Doctors, Acupuncturist, and of course in all my FB groups... but no responses! So I decided to just trust and have faith that I was on the right path and all of this had to happen for a reason. There are some things and at times many things that are not going to make sense to me, but I need to just trust my gut... so I did and Chris was feeling the same way, so we took it as a sign and agreed to come back on Friday May 11th and make our final decision to transfer the following week or cancel and stop all the hormones.

May 11th- Finally my body is making sense!!! Now my lining is at 9mm and my E2 levels increased to 2,000 which is where it normally is for most women when ready to transfer! So we thought about it, talked with our Dr and we decided we are READY!! So we scheduled our transfer for May18th.

We are very excited and of course nervous.

To all the other IVF Warriors out there that may be reading this. Keep fighting. Trust your gut. Ask questions. And push to be treated as you deserve. Chris and I were the ones to suggest we try the mock cycle, and I am in no way saying anything negative about or Dr., its just as I have said many times before, you know yourself and your body and you have to be willing to advocate for yourself.

I had a lot of people tell me to get 2nd opinions, and we haven't really at this point, and many may disagree with that, but I feel that I am right where I am supposed to be at this point. It works for me, but if you are not comfortable and not happy then please get another opinion, find a way to be an advocate for yourself and if there is any way I can ever help, just ask!!

So for now.. I will begin preparing myself for our TRANSFER!! Some self-care, acupuncture, baths, reading, eating avocados, cleaning the house (so I don't need to later) and of course meditating.clover716http://www.blogger.com/profile/00397011406860776011noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3619572320340300603.post-89109611148887371392018-04-21T09:08:00.002-04:002018-04-21T09:08:28.632-04:00A single failure....Well... we decided to cancel the transfer. I am still completely confused as to what happened. I know it is common for women to struggle with lining issues, however in my particular case it does not seem "normal". According to my ultrasounds, my lining grew from a 3 (baseline) to a 7mm (1st monitoring) in a week, then to a 13mm (2nd monitoring) in the next week and then back down to a 8mm (3rd monitoring) in 6 days, we decided to add another monitoring 2 days later and it was around a 7mm... this makes no sense to anyone, not my doctor or acupuncturist. My hormones continued to rise and stay in the right zones and I was feeling great. I didn't miss any medications, was meditating and staying positive. It was the last thing I was expecting.

Chris came with me to the appointment and helped talk it out with the doctor. We decided to convert the cycle to a "mock" cycle. I am going to stay on the estrogen for another 10 days (yeah! can't wait!) and see what happens to my lining.. if it continuing to shrink... or thicken??? I still can't shake the feeling that the 13 measurement could have been an error... all of the ultrasounds were done by the same doctor on the same machine...but he did say it could have been a shadow of some sorts on the screen.. which then at least my situation would be a little more typical with a lining that is struggling to thicken. I feel a little more comfortable with that scenario. As always only time will tell. The one thing we know is we are not comfortable transferring this little guy until we feel my body is perfect and ready. That is not to say that this disappointment is not ripping my heart apart.

I am more scared about the future.. will I ever be ready.. is my body and the universe trying to tell me I am not meant for pregnancy.. am I doing something wrong.. these are all the things that cross my mind and I am terrified of the answers. I feel broken. I feel like I may not deserve this for some reason. I know I "shouldn't" feel this way and it probably isn't true but it is my inner fears. I want to be a warrior and I know I am... warriors have moments of weakness too.

On the medical end, I also have so many thoughts... did this happen last time and we didn't catch it? Was the endometriosis making my lining appear thicker? Has it somehow grown back already causing problems? Is there a cyst or growth some where? Do I need to loose weight? Its never ending... the thoughts just keep coming...

So for now, I am going to try and stay positive, reminding myself that I will be a Mom one day, some how, it just can't happen in the timing I want. I have to learn to be patient. Chris has already told me over 100 times since yesterday that I am not broken, he loves me forever and we are going to be parents, and I guess I just need to trust him because it's all I have left. I need to stop blaming myself and trust the process, I know it is hard and I continue to be a work in progress but it's what I need to do. So I will keep working on myself in all the ways I can, and starting with some more self care.
Today was supposed to be the beginning of phase 2 of the protocol. I should be starting the Lovenox and PIO tonight, but things didnt go as planned. It seems that my lining has gotten thinner instead of getting thicker. Last appointment it showed that I had a 13mm lining, this time I was down to an 8. We are not sure what happened. We talked with our Dr and it seems that all the hormones are the same and in a good range, but the lining has gotten thinner. We decided to wait and see what happens over the next 48 hours. Maybe the lining will get thicker... but we are not sure at this point. So either way my transfer is delayed and now possibly going to be cancelled. Im a mess to be completely honest. I just feel defeated, like I can never be prepared emotionally and now I am not sure what my body is doing. Its hard to feel so "ready" and positive when my body just isn't responding the way that it should.. what does this mean.... is this a sytmptom or a sign of yet another fertility problem? Is my body able to do this? I am at a lost right now... I know the best thing is to wait for everything to be perfect and for my Doctor to feel that we are at the best place physically.. but it is hard to know if that point is ever going to come.. will I ever be ready? I want to be strong and positive, but right now especially with all these hormones its difficult to feel that way. I fell weak and sad. I have a long 48 hours ahead of me of researching and trying to see what I would like to do if my lining does thicken.. is that ok? Is it still a good idea to transfer.. I am not sure at this point. Will the extra estrogen help or is it too much for my body. Is this what happened last time? So many thoughts going through my head. clover716http://www.blogger.com/profile/00397011406860776011noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3619572320340300603.post-12016188683109169312018-03-31T09:29:00.005-04:002018-03-31T09:29:57.968-04:00Trying Again

We are about to start our 2nd embryo transfer!!! I can't believe it is actually happening again. My feelings this time around are so different than last time. This time I am MUCH calmer but also way more terrified than I was last time. I know what to expect, but I am terrified of not getting a positive result. This is something I have been dealing with since my surgery and finding out that I should be ready to transfer in April, I immediately started to feel like I need to protect my heart. I swear, I never want to look at a pregnancy test again, I am terrified, but I am working on it and I have found a few things that seem to be helping.

I have been working out more, I just use a small elliptical that I have at home, I try to get on it every morning when I wake up. This is helping me feel better and positive about myself and I plan to continue through my protocol.

I am meditating. I purchased the Circle & Bloom meditation for Frozen Embryo Transfers. It is really helping me relax and mentally picture and prepare myself for what my body is doing and is about to do. It often puts me right to sleep or really close to it. I feel myself just being more calm. I have also been saying more affirmations to myself, something along the lines of "I deserve this, I deserve to be a mother and it will happen in some way" and I seem to be accepting this more this time around, Im not sure why, but I like how it is making me feel. I have an inner-peace about it. I don't feel as anxious that it HAS to happen right now... even though I still want it to with my whole heart and soul, I just feel different about it now. I am also listening to a "chant" that a Yogi gave me to Kali, the Buddhist goddess of time while doing some fertility yoga poses (mostly keeping my legs up in the air). Im not sure how much these elements will actually help my physically, but they are definitely helping me mentally.

I started to see a chiropractor, she works with infertility, pregnant women, infants and children. She is great, she is sweet and has a great energy about her. She explained to me that seeing her will not increase any odds per se, but it does help your organs function at their best. Interesting enough all the vertebrates that seem to be "out of line" were all related to my pelvic region... so who knows. I see her once a week for adjustments and I am feeling great.

I am still seeing my acupuncturist 2 times a week as well.

This protocol is going to be much different than last time. Starting with beginning estrogen for an extra week. Yesterday I began with 2 estrogen patches (changed every other day), estrogen vaginal inserts 2 times a day and a steroid. On April 14th, I will be having an Intralipid Infusion, a home health nurse will be coming to my home and giving me the infusion. Then a blood thinner injection (Lovenox), Progesterone shots and vaginal inserts will be added in to the protocol as we approach April 23rd.

Chris and I decided to organize the meds much different this time around, since last time I was a mess and couldn't remember what I had taken, when I changed the patches and he couldn't either! I couldn't believe how much the hormones effected me mentally, so this time we wanted to be better prepared. We decided to use ziplock bags. We put everything I need to take for the day in the bag- AM/PM and then in a large bag labeled with the day. It took us awhile but I really think it will be worth it. Also just having him be involved from the beginning helps take the pressure off of me and he will be able to help me stay on it if my brain starts to get mushy again!!
It was a very emotional day. I was actually scared to death. I was terrified to wake up and find out my body could never carry a baby, or lose both of my tubes and NEVER be able to conceive naturally.

I'll save you the stress... it ended up being ok! I did have to have my right tube removed due to the Hydrosalpinx. He also removed some endometriosis and some polyps. I have 3 incisions, by my belly button and 2 in the pelvic region.

I was in a lot of pain when I woke up. I of course was crying... this seems to be my go to move coming out of these surgeries. They gave me some more pain relievers and then some medicine to help with nausea. After letting me rest for 2 hours I got to go home. My pain was present all night, more like the worst cramps I have ever had. My incredible husband and Mother in Law took great care of me.

Today I woke up feeling much better. I am more sore and tired today. It hurts to get up and down, but I am following the recommended directions and moving around as much as I can. I plan to rest for the rest of the week.

I have a follow-up visit with my doctor on Monday to remove my stitches and discuss our future.

I really just hope with all my might that this is our missing piece. I am feeling like I am at the end of my road.. I do not know how much more my heart can handle!!!
This can be really hard, but you HAVE to do your research and not be afraid to speak your opinions to the doctor. I know that "they" know more, but honestly in a lot of cases, they don't know "your body" like you do. Don't get me wrong, I love my Doctor, the PA, nurses and all the staff at my clinic, but the reality is as much as they love me and are good at their job, its not their body, they don't have to feel the loss like we do and they are not the one without the desired child. So regardless of their knowledge versus yours, you are automatically more invested in the outcome.

As I mentioned in my last post, I decided I was not ready to jump back into another try, something just didn't feel right about it. I wanted more testing to make sure nothing was missed. I read a lot about the information that other women found from tests like Repetitive Loss Panel (RPL), autoimmune testing and actual testing on/in your uterus. I made an appointment with my Physicians Assistant after my first period. I requested the (RPL) even though I knew they were not usually run until 2-3 miscarriages, but I felt like I do not have the opportunity to wait for that to happen as I am using donated embryos, besides the fact that it made me sick to think about. I also spoke to her about other tests, I wanted a repeat Saline Sonogram, this is a test that I had done 2 times already and the last time it showed I had grown polyps in my uterus which needed to be removed via surgery. This was also something I had to advocate for as it is only "typically" done ever 6 months. But I wanted it done before I would consider trying again to make sure "all was clear". The RPL takes about 2 weeks to come back, so in the meantime I had the sonogram done that showed no polyps or growths and I asked about more testing. The Clinical Manager at my office suggested one test to me called Fertilome. It is a new test that is basically a genetic DNA test for fertility issues. It looks at your DNA and comes up with percentages of you having a specific infertile problem. I definitely wanted this test as it would cover all the areas I was concerned about, RPL- clotting issues, Auto-immune, PCOS, Endometriosis and some more common issues. Then the PA suggested another test called Receptive Dx, which is a endometrium biopsy that checks for some common cells seen in endometriosis or hydrosalpinx (swelling of fallopian tubes). So I researched these tests, talked to Chris and waited to meet with our Dr for the first follow up after the RPL.

This is where the craziness all begins. We found out that I have a genetic mutation called MTHFR (not a curse word). Google it to find out more, especially if you are trying to get pregnant, as it is very common. However, I have a more complicated version as I have 2 compounds, 1 from each of my parents. The theory is, and I say theory because there are not many medical professionals out there that completely "buy into" MTHFR, but there are millions of women that when they treated it, and switched some very simple things in there life found immediate success- so in the fertility world, why not try it??? Ok so the 2 main concerns with this mutation is that it can cause blood clotting, which is a major cause for miscarriages and/or implantation failure. So to treat this concern, I will be taking a blood thinner injection starting before the next transfer and continue until at least 1st trimester (but I plan to stay on longer) unless someone can prove to me that it is hurting me or the baby. The other concern is how my body breaks down and uses folic acid- which we all know is what we need while pregnant. This is where the research becomes controversial. Many doctors recommend more folic acid to cover the bases sort of speak- but many women and naturopathic doctors believe folic acid is not useful or helpful to a woman with MTHFR, so they recommend folate. Which is basically the natural form of folic acid... think drinking orange juice compared to taking vitamin C pills.... but worse if you have this mutation because research shows your body can handle and store folate correctly but can't break down the man made version of it called folic acid. If you have this mutation or are struggling to get pregnant or stay pregnant, do your research on this and see what you think!

Next we talked to our Dr about the other tests we wanted done and he agreed to be more aggressive in our situation and order these tests. I felt relieved. We did the Fertilome blood test and the biopsy. We waited 3 weeks for the results and then had another follow up... this is where everything changes for us.

The Fertilome came back showing high risk for Diminished Ovarian Reserve (my initial diagnosis) Endometriosis, RPL clotting issues and Auto Immune....yes ALL of the things I was concerned about. The biopsy confirmed that there is either endometriosis or hydrosalpinx present, so basically a whole lot of things that can 100% be causing our failure. First thing we tackled was the next protocol, our Dr agreed to treat all of these without more testing. So that means adding the already discussed blood thinner, steroids, and Intralipid infusions. This will all be added to the standard protocol of estrogen and progesterone.

Next comes what to do about the endometriosis. He suggests a Laparoscopy to get inside and confirm endometriosis and remove anything. He says that I most likely do not have Hydrosalpinx as I had a clear HSG (standard IVF testing done last March 2017). I begin to tell him that the test was extremely painful and that the radiologist had a difficult time, but I was told that the report said all was "normal". He looked back at the radiologist report and read it to us that the fallopian tubes were all clear, but now he is wondering if he should look at the scans himself to double check since he will be doing the laparoscopy anyway. He explained that Hydrosalpinx has been proved to be very toxic to embryos, so even though you do not "need" you fallopian tubes when doing IVF, if it's swollen and infected with toxic fluid, this fluid can be leaking into your uterus and hurting or flushing an embryo right out of your uterus.

I went to Vassar Brothers Hospital the next day, picked up my disc of scans, brought it to doctor and they told me the Dr will look at it and call me either way. He called a few hours later and said he was confident that I have hydrosalpinx. He said my right tube looked very swollen, like a sausage and he absolutely recommended taking it out. I about lost it on the phone, flipping out "how could this have been missed??" He explained that some radiologist just look for the "spillage of fluid" and not at the actual tube... BULLSHIT... this is the whole point of this exam to look at your fallopian tubes and there function. I hung up crying and of course called Chris...who was eerie silent (which I knew was not good) and very calmly said, call back the Dr and have him call me. You have to understand how devastating this is to find out a year later... our whole plan would have been different... they would have found endometriosis earlier, we could potentially be pregnant right now from our last transfer as this toxic fluid could have hurt our embryo.... all of this flashing through our minds was just TOO much to handle. We both screamed in anger, not at each other but just to release some emotion.... but after the night or screaming and crying hysterically, it was time to pick ourselves up and move forward.

I got my period 2 days later, went back to the office and looked at the scans myself, it was easy for regular old eye like mine to see... 1 tube was nice and thin, the other looked HUGE in comparison. I cried again. This is what I mean, I have advocated for myself, researched, talked to 100's of women and this was still missed, because I never thought to make sure someone looked at these scans, I didn't push further to say that test REALLY hurt me, can you please look it over, I just trusted everyone and unfortunately things were missed and WE suffered, nobody else, just us. All I can do is hope that this doesn't happen to anyone else, so please BE PUSHY!! Don't be afraid to speak up, its YOUR body and health!!

I have to admit, I am having a much harder time accepting this loss and moving forward than anything else I have experienced in life. I cry ALL THE TIME. For the first two weeks I literally cried all day long, I would have a few moments where I was able to be distracted and then BAM something would make me think about it. I have talked to other women that have experienced this pain of failed transfers, miscarriages and the infertility struggle and they all say that this pain is the same. You lost a child, you lost the thought of the child that you already love with everything that you have. It is very hard to pick yourself up and move forward, but in the end you have to. You have to find a way to be ok, to remember why you are on this journey and to begin to have hope for the next time.

I am trying to heal my soul. I am trying to take some time, and listen to myself. Not control everything, not try to find an answer because believe me that is all that I want to do, but try to be in the moment and feel what my soul needs to feel.

I have done some research and spoken to my doctors about additional testing which will soon follow. But we made the decision that we are not ready to jump back into another cycle, that we need some time to heal. So I am trying to heal.

I have started to use more meditation and relaxing thoughts to soothe me. I was having terrible nightmares for weeks and couldn't sleep. As soon as it was time to sleep I would start to feel anxious, my subconscious is still struggling and needs more time to process this loss. During the day, I am able to rationalize and calm myself down, but in my sleep I am struggling. I have always been a vivid dreamer, but these nightmares are terrible. I am always loosing a baby in one way or another, of course miscarriages, other failed transfers, but also just loosing a child in a mall, or having them kidnapped, or dying at an older age... its just terrible. So I started to listen to some meditation to help me fall asleep and calming sounds to help soothe my subconscious and it is working. I am still very sad and cry more than I would like to admit, but I am also feeling a little better.

I have to keep reminding myself that we are on this journey for a reason and we need to be grateful for that. We are growing closer with every obstacle, we are learning more about each other through the process and with every loss we want a baby more. So I know this is something that we both want with all of our heart and soul and all I can do is have hope that it will happen for us in one way or another, the hard part is the waiting, being patient and staying in the moment. Let's just say I am work in progress, but I am strong and I will find my strength again.

clover716http://www.blogger.com/profile/00397011406860776011noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3619572320340300603.post-69154966513338986622018-01-17T14:01:00.002-05:002019-03-25T13:34:40.694-04:00Our transfer First off I would like to start off by saying that I am so very sorry for taking over a month off from writing. I am sorry to myself as I use this as a form of therapy and I'm sorry if there is anyone out there that follows this closely!

Where to start... well Progesterone shots suck!! They hurt me so bad, I basically cried every night in pain, and I could even feel it through out the day when walking around... but we got to take them. I will say that it was another small part that brought Chris and I closer through out this process. He gave me the shots every night as they are taken in the upper part of your butt. I would lay down with an ice pack to try and numb the injection area, Chris would as always prepare the medicine and then he would inject me... this is a different process than all of our other meds, because they recommend that you inject it very slow as it is a thick oil... it hurts! I could feel it going in no matter how much I tried not to. After a few minutes Chris would massage the area and try to work the oil into my system, this sounds like it would be relaxing, but really it just made it hurt more as the muscle is so bruised. I have read other women do not feel anything... so I think its like everything else on the journey every woman is different and your body will feel it differently. But we were both strong and took this injection every night for 18 days leading up to our beta (blood test results) day. One thing that I will remember forever about this specific process, is Chris who never cries, was very emotional doing this nightly, he still never cried but he did say to me "You are a much stronger person than I am, if I had to do this every night, I would have asked you to quit already, I would be asking you if we could just adopt a child, because I could not take this pain nightly or let you stick this HUGE needle in to me every night." Then he said "So thank you for giving your body and enduring this pain for me and our son, I love you and you are so strong". Of course I cried even harder the particular night...

As a side note- my friend Danielle Kolachik who owns a nonprofit called The Dkol La Femme Project photographed pieces of our story, in part to raise some awareness and also to help us through this journey, she even came to the transfer with us. Chris's smile in this picture both warms by heart and breaks it at the same time. He was so purely happy. He like myself loved that little embryo like it was already his son, and he was.

I broke down on 9 days past the transfer and took a home pregnancy test (hpt)... we were both home and feeling super positive.... worst mistake ever... it was negative... as much as I swore up and down to Chris that I wouldn't be upset... I wad devastated... I cried myself to sleep. The next day I decided to be super positive again and tried to convince myself it was to early to test. But I knew in my heart that it most likely did not work. I decided to enjoy "being pregnant" for a few more days- because I was, all my friends and family treated me like I was, at work people barely let me do anything, at home Chris and my mom took care of everything, letting me rest. Then Christmas came and our family came to our house and took over letting me rest and enjoy the company, but the whole time there was a little hole in my heart that I refused to pay attention to.

On 14 days past transfer I woke up around 5 am, I decided that I couldn't wait all day for the blood results, so I took our final hpt, a digital one... it revealed that I was once again... NOT PREGNANT. It has to be the worst image in the entire world, I literally fell to floor in our bathroom and cried hysterically until Chris came and found me. He carried me back to bed and held me while I lost my whole soul. Even now typing this I shed more tears for our loss. He promised to stay with me all day, taking off of work and took me to the appointment. The nurse drew the blood and told me its not over until the doctor calls with the results, but I couldn't even pretend to believe that. We left, relaxed at home and waited for the dreaded phone call. It finally came later that night around 5:30 and our doctor confirmed that we were not pregnant. He told us to take some time and come back when we were ready and I got my period.

Even though I knew it was coming, there are no words to explain this loss. It is the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. Its the loss of our son, the loss of our future sons' sibling, the loss of the image of the family of four I have been seeing mentally since the day we received this donation. It's the loss of hope. It's the loss of my strength and I am just so sad. This is why I have not been able to write to anyone, the feelings are terrible to explain and there are no words of comfort. I came across this letter and it expresses a lot of my feelings and if you have had a failed transfer, you might be feeling the same way. http://www.scarymommy.com/ivf-embryos/

Im working on myself, gaining the strength and having hope. I am leaning on my husband, who I have NEVER seen so sad and broken, but we will grow together and build our family one way or another.

It was shared in a Facebook group that she is in for Donors. I think its beautiful and plan to keep it forever. It made me tear up and feel so blessed to be on this path to motherhood.
See you next week". I have waited a long time to hear that! He also said to keep doing what I have been doing, so the relaxing and giving myself some self-care seems to be doing great things for me. I am sure it also helps that I feel really positive and like I am finally on my path to be a Momma.

I wanted to share a little more about my personal experience of receiving these embabies. I have shared a lot of the facts, but not the personal story. The connection that this donor family (I will keep their identity protected) and I have is amazing. Honestly, its more about the donor mom and myself, we have done all of the communicating, although we both share it with our husbands. We have been connected since we first started communicating, we just "hit it off". It's not something I could really explain, but I just had this great feeling and such a strong connection to her. We seemed to have so much in common in the right ways, our values seem to be similar, and on some level we both just felt like this was the right choice for both of us.

We have shared many emails, Facebook chats and text messages over the past few months. Some about our desires, fears and hopes for the future, some about specific details about the future, some about our families and some about nothing, just regular everyday friend talk. It's amazing, I have gained a friend who will always be family to us. She has honestly become one of my biggest cheerleaders, I share all my infertility ups and downs with her and she is nothing but supportive and positive that we are all making the right choice. It honestly gives me the goosebumps whenever I talk about our experience so far with anyone, this is how I know we are on our path to be parents, it all just finally feels right!

She always tries to explain to me that I am not the only one receiving a gift, she is as well, she now gets to know that her embryos will get a chance at life and when they become sweet little boys, she feels at peace knowing that Chris and I will be loving them every moment of everyday. It's statements like this that tell me our future relationship with these amazing, generous people will be easy and natural.

We have not met in person, but are already more connected than most people are. She already has 2 boys, so our boys will be having 2 brothers and I honestly can't wait to watch them all grow up. Which is also something I want to share. We 100% plan to tell our children their story from birth. Of course the version of the story and details will evolve as it is developmentally appropriate, but they will always know that Mommy and Daddy needed some help from these amazing people to have them. I have done hours of research on this, and it is agreed on by many professionals as well as families that have personally experienced adoption, that it is always better to be honest from the beginning. Let the child own their story, be proud of it and know how much they were loved. I have even asked the donor family to make a book about their family so the boys can see it and we can read it to them.

For anyone that is going through infertility, I strongly encourage you to look into and research embryo donation/adoption, because it has completed my life. Even if, God forbid our transfers are not successful, I would still 100% recommend this path to someone who is struggling to conceive. DNA is only one small part of being a parent, the fact that I will get to carry a baby, bond with him from the beginning is such a blessing.

Here are some messages that I have received from the donor mom... just so you can get an idea of our connection, and how beautiful this process can be.
December 13, 2017. I can't believe it!!

Basically in a sentence.... 1 embryo will be put inside and hopefully implant and I will be pregnant!!

So first comes all the hormone replacement/supplementation....

This is my protocol:

2 Estrogen patches every other day
2 Estrogen vaginal inserts a day

After 2 weesk I add the Progesterone to the protocol

2 vaginal inserts and 1 nasty injection of oil every night.

This protocol is different than preparing for the egg retrieval as I will stay on these hormones until we find out we are pregnant or not... if we aren't then I stop it all and get my period. If we are (which we will be) then I take all of the above for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy and possibly longer if the doctors think I need it... So its going to be a VERY hormonal Holiday Season, but it will be so worth it!!

Again, as always with my life and the infertility world it has been an emotional rollercoaster getting to this point... I was supposed to start my protocol on Friday (11/24), but when I went for my suppression check (make sure the birth control did its job and nothing is happening in my ovaries), everything looked great....however I had not started to bleed from my period yet... so the doctor wanted to delay a day...sure no biggie... until he says and "if you don't bleed tomorrow, then we will have to cancel till next month"...wait...WHAT DID HE JUST SAY??? I didn't even know this was possible.. it always takes me like 6-7 days to bleed after the BC, I would have said something earlier when I received my protocol had I known this was an option! But as usual, I was prepared for so many things... expect this one..

So now comes the excessive googling and searching infertility groups on what the hell to do to induce my period... after a hot bath, raspberry leaf tea and a good nights sleep... nothing... So after crying, I realize this is yet again something that is out of my control and I just need to accept it... its either not my time or we were meant to be delayed a day... so I went for a walk since it was 55 degrees in November... and decided to do some jumping jacks with one last attempt to "shake up my uterus" (oh the things we do to make a baby) and low and behold I started to bleed!! Never thought I would be so happy to see that when I have been TTC for over a year!! I call the doctor and update him and he gives me the official word to start the protocol... crisis averted... until the next one!!!

But seriously, the rollercoaster is starting to take its toll on Chris and I, so we have decided to take it easy, relax and try to just enjoy each other. Its very hard to keep yourself calm, positive and relaxed throughout your infertility process but my hope is to wake up every day and remember that I am loved by my husband, it is all out of my control anyway, and I WILL be a Momma one way or another. So much easier said then done, but I plan to give myself A LOT of self- love, self-care and self-compassion over this next month. I also plan to give my husband all the rest of the love I have to offer because I often forget that he is going through all of this too... he may be stronger, more positive and always calmer than me, but it is affecting him just the same.

clover716http://www.blogger.com/profile/00397011406860776011noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3619572320340300603.post-87423820219452015172017-11-26T15:05:00.004-05:002017-11-26T15:05:48.463-05:00Picking up the Boys!Things are official!! We are the proud parents of 2 embryos! As a matter of fact, 2 male embryos! That's right I'm the proud Momma of 2 boys. But first I will walk you through the steps.

First- we needed to go through all the legalities. It was actually fairly easy for the Donor family and Chris and I. We all agreed pretty easily. We just want whatever is best for the boys. We hired our lawyer, they wrote up a "standard" agreement and then recommended a lawyer to the donor family at our cost. We all agreed to the terms and sign.. simple.. but took SOOO long!!

Next- comes all the "red tape" of NYS. I have to say we couldn't LOVE our Fertility Clinic any more than we do. They truly care about their patients and are beyond supportive. They have helped me so much through this whole process. I have heard so many horror stories that embryo donations are just not possible in New York. But they helped me through the process and were willing to put in extra work and steps on their end, all to make our dreams come true. Basically, its all about the testing that was done to donor families and the embryos, NY is very strict on this and wants to make sure the embryos are "safe" to cross into the state... which is a little bizarre considering their are already ours and going into my body willingly... but whatever. It took many weeks of emailing back and forth before we were finally given the ok to get our babies.

Then comes the pick up! We decided again with the help and support of our clinic to go pick up the embryos ourselves! Which meant we would literally picked up a nitrogen tank from the office, drove to Morgantown, WV (thats right MORGANtown!!), went to the donor's clinic and they placed the embryos inside the tank and we drove back to NY. This was about a 7 hour drive, so we left on a Sunday, picked them up Monday am and headed straight to our clinic. The boys had a successful first car ride and remained perfect little snowflakes.

Here is a picture of our first family road trip.
Chris and I have actively began our process of finding a beautiful family to donate their embryos to us, and to our surprise we believe we have already found them! For their privacy and all the children involved, I will not share specific details, but I will tell you about this amazing process so far.

First we began by posting our profile on 2 different websites that charge a small fee (to help run website and advertising). These websites could be compared to an online dating site. We post our profile with all kinds of specific details about ourselves and our life together. We are called the "recipient families" and then the "donor families" post their own profile with details about themselves and the remaining embryos they wish to donate. After setting up the profiles, I sent out a few emails to families that seemed like they had a similar family life. A few families responded but most of them were not interested in moving further with us, due to our religious beliefs, basically since we do not belong to a church or have a dominant religion, people did not feel comfortable. I completely understand that they have their beliefs and want their children to be raised the same way. Some other people responded and we just didn't "click".

The main discussion between families quickly becomes about the future and what kind of adoption you want. As I have mentioned in the previous post, there are 3 kinds of adoption, closed, semi-open and open adoptions. Anyone that is on a site like this will most likely want at the very least a semi-open adoption as they will already know who we are. Most of the families that responded to our profile were looking for a very open adoption, some were a little out of our comfort zone, mostly because it did not "feel" natural. They wanted the agreement to state a visit once a year (or more), constant communication and basically wants to be "best friends or extended family". While it is not necessary the idea of this that makes us uncomfortable, its the idea that we "have" to. My hope and wish is that we find a family that we naturally came to this agreement. We would be raising their child's full sibling, we know we will meet eventually and hope that the children become close and be true siblings, which along the way the parents will become closer and grow with them. It's a strange concept to wrap your mind around, however its also truly amazing. Our children will get to be so loved, and get to have more siblings than we would be able to give them!

Anyway, on to the good stuff. Then we received an email from an amazing couple. Things felt so right, and so natural. We emailed back and forth, sharing details about our lives, past and our hopes for the future. We just "clicked" and it feels great. We all agree that its about the children, our hope is to give them the best lives getting to know each other in ways that we are all comfortable with and are developmentally appropriate. We have shared more pictures and have even become Facebook friends.

We have agreed to move forward with the process, Chris and I have contacted a reproductive lawyer and waiting to see what the next steps are. We are over the moon and it just feels like we are finally on the right path. clover716http://www.blogger.com/profile/00397011406860776011noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3619572320340300603.post-57660293668053620772017-08-22T20:52:00.000-04:002017-08-28T20:52:29.592-04:00Embryo DonationThis will basically be an informative post about Embryo Donation. It can sound much more complicated than it actually is. Here is what wikipedia has to offer about it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embryo_donation

There are several ways to go about receiving this donation.

1. From a clinic- this would be anonymous- we would know almost nothing about the family, it would be a closed adoption (no contact) and most places have a year waitlist to receive the embryos.

2. From an agency- could be any kind of adoption, however they charge a significant fee and have strong requirements, some being religious beliefs and/or years of marriage- basically we don't qualify for this option.

3. Independent- directly from a family- any type of adoption, although you will clearly know who each other are, more affordable and the opportunity to know much more information about all the families involved.

For many reasons the "independent" option work for us. We want to know the family we receive this unbelievable gift from, we want our future children to know their story and where they came from and we don't want to be giving money to someone who could be making a profit off of this amazing donation.

We want a semi-open to an open adoption. We feel that it is important for our children to know their whole story, all their truths and that they were beyond loved, so much that they were given the best chance at becoming a person. We feel its an important part of development to know where you came from, we don't ever want our children to think we have lied to them, so we plan to tell them the truth from brith. Of course we will do it in a developmentally appropriate way, such as a cute storybook, picture books and a child version of their story.

We are still learning about the process, but will know more as we move along. We know that we will need to sign up for some websites, some Facebook groups, and get our information out there. If we find a family that we match with, then we move on to the legal process, which we are not exactly sure what it entails, but we are excited!!

This is my new motto.... I will be a mother and it will be soon!

Monday we met with our Doctor to discuss our options. It went pretty much as expected. He said he was comfortable being honest with us as he could tell we were ready and able to handle it. He explained that our best option to have a baby would be to use donor eggs. He feels that with my very low AMH number, I have officially begun Premature Ovarian Reserve, which is what I have said many times before in the blog that my ovaries are much older than me. If a 45-48 year old woman went to a doctor and wanted to get pregnant, this is the kind of number they would expect to see from her. So yes, for those of you who want to say it can still happen, it can, but the point is as far as medical opinions are concerned, it would not be worth it to pay thousands of dollars for IVF since it is not really increasing our chances of success. My eggs are just not great quality, so if there is a good one left in there, pumping my body with medicine is not really increasing the chances of that egg finding its way to Chris's sperm, if that makes sense.

I have been told by a few people to get a second opinion, again, I absolutely know you mean well, because you have heard yet again another miracle story, where someone changed Doctors and got pregnant. However, there are also MANY clinics out there that wouldn't even work with me since my number is as low as it is, which is why I have been so devastated all along. Chris and I said all along we would do this once, it was really me that wanted to give it one shot, I wanted to see what my body could and would do, so I could know in my heart I did everything I could, but you can not change your biological clock, it just is what it is. You have to understand how hard it was to even motivate myself the first time knowing how much the odds were stacked against me, but I wanted to believe my body could make a miracle too. I have not given up complete hope on it, I will continue to take care of it and learn to love it again, after all its the only body I have and I am now hopeful that I will just be able to carry a baby.

Chris and I heard what the doctor said about donor eggs, however we had already been doing our own research and have found another option that we are really excited about. Donor Embryos. To explain it as easy as possible, other families that have gone through IVF, completed their families and are fortunate enough to still have remaining embryos can donate these embryos to another family. It's really an incredible thing, its another family that literally experienced the same heartbreak, then were one of the lucky ones to come out successful able to give back to the other couples that are still struggling and give them the opportunity to be parents. Chris and I fell in love with this idea, we love that we can carry and bond with a baby for 9 months and get to still experience all the things we hoped for, the only thing that would be different is genetics, which means nothing to us. We are both 100% ok with the idea of raising a child that is not genetically ours, in fact we are falling more and more in love with the idea that our children could have other siblings to know when they are older.

We know this is a very different thing for many people to understand and support, but it is our life and our choice. We encourage you to do some research on it, it truly is amazing and speaks to our soul. I will of course continue to write about our journey, therefore you as the reader will learn more about the process through us.clover716http://www.blogger.com/profile/00397011406860776011noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3619572320340300603.post-19771558800402080102017-08-05T09:12:00.001-04:002017-08-05T09:12:08.201-04:00Not our time...It has taken me a few days to even think of writing about these past few heartbreaking days. I honestly struggled to sleep or even get out of bed, but I am now feeling much better (as much as I can be) and ready to begin exploring our next step options. That's what us Fertility Warriors do.. we keep fighting and don't give up until there is a sweet baby in our arms.

On Monday 7/31 (day 3) we got a phone call that our 2 perfect Embryos were still perfect, Grade 1, and there was 1 Embryo that was still fighting at a Grade 3. We were so relieved, they said they wouldn't call until Day 5- Wednesday as they do not check the Embryos on Day 4. On Wednesday, I honestly wasn't too nervous, I thought they have been perfect, they should make it to Blast, but I was way wrong...

The doctor called and told me we had 1 Embryo that was currently at what they like to see at Day 4, he/she had only around 30-40 cells and should be around 70 by this point, she explained that this can naturally happen and he/she may catch up...I remember taking a sigh and thinking this was the bad news and waiting for her to say the other 2 were still perfect...nope, she broke my heart and said "I'm sorry but the other 2 have stopped growing". I honestly heard nothing after that. I hung up, called Chris and cried, he was in shock I could tell, he said he would finish a few things at work and leave early. Of course I was about to drive home, now I had to somehow make it an hour in the car alone... I couldn't calm down, I had to call Chris and beg him to just leave work now because I needed to hear his voice until I got home, of course he did. After I made it home safely, he called the doctor and tried to find out more information, but I had heard most of it correctly. She said we had a 50/50 chance of our remaining Embryo to make it until Day 6, if he/she did it could still be frozen and transferred in the future. So we basically laid in bed all night just holding each other, I cried for hours, and Chris tried to be strong for us, I couldn't believe how much it hurt to loose something we never even knew yet, but what people don't understand is, it's already a baby to us, we want it so bad that as much as we try not to, we already had our hopes up, we were already parents in our mind, I spent hours thinking of how those little babies were growing, hoping they were ok and that someone else was taking care of them so I could one day continue to do so. It literally broke my heart to think it was already over... so much time, money and pain went into making these little guys and in a matter of days it was all over...

I couldn't sleep, I woke up in a panic every few hours and dreamed of our 1 little embryo, praying he/she was a fighter, and some how beat the odds.... but thats not what happen. Surprisingly, I was able to stay calm during this phone call and ask some questions. The nurse explained that there is never really a definite answer as to why these things don't work out, but in her experience it could be that when our genes mix together we for some reason do not make a viable embryo. She reminded me that we only had 4 mature eggs to work with and the odds were just not in our favor. I told her I would like to see the Doctor next week for a follow up and wanted to start exploring our other options, I reminded her that all along we have said "We just want to be parents, we know it will be hard and sad, but we don't care how we get there, nothing is off the table, except trying the same thing over and over again looking for a different outcome".

Basically, as much as I would love to have a baby that is both mine and Chris's, I just want to raise a child with him, and he feels the same. We already have a house filled with love, laughter and support, we want nothing more than to add a little peanut to that mix. We know we will love any baby like it is our own, so why keep trying for our "own", when my success rate is so low... its not worth all this stress, pain and money to me just to say the baby is my genetics. Genetics only mean so much in this world, they have nothing to do with being the parent that loves them everyday, helps them grow in to amazing human beings, it is just your DNA not what makes you a parent.

So now after I have had a few days to process and grieve, I am feeling optimistic again. I know we will be parents one day soon, its just finding that right path to lead us there. For now, I will be extremely grateful that I wake up every day loved by my husband who feels exactly the same way I do about our situation, which I know is rare, and love him back just as much, while we pursue our dream of having a baby.

Friday morning 11am retrieval. Chris drove me to the doctor, we sat with the nurse, signed more consents and went over the procedure. She explained to Chris how to take care of me the rest of the day, getting plenty of rest, drink fluids and take my pain meds before I felt pain. We kissed in the hallway and off I went to get changed. I was so nervous, but I decided to be super brave and I didn't cry!!

I changed into this hot outfit and went into the surgical room.

The only thing I remember is the nurse talking to me about my cute socks and thats it. Next thing I know I woke up in a different room and of course began bawling.... I was crying for Chris. Then the nurse I know better came in the room, held my hand, rubbed my head and kept asking what was wrong. I told her I was scared and that Chris brought me hear because something was wrong... she continued to reassure me that I was fine in fact I did "soooo good", thats what she kept telling me until I calmed down. Then I was able to eat a few cookies and drink some juice. I still had no clue if we got any eggs or how many.... after checking my vials, I got to get up and get dressed. I saw a text from Chris saying he was so happy, proud of me and I did so good.... still no clue what this meant... the nurse walked me to the bathroom and then told me I could meet with the doctor.

The doctor then told us the greatest news, he was able to retrieve 5 eggs!!!! I just started to cry again, but happy tears!! He explained that 3 were definitely mature and the other 2 were close behind. He told us we would receive a call every day including the weekend until day 5 or 6 with an update on our eggs. We left with smiles and tears, once outside we just hugged. It felt like our miracle could actually happen.

I rested all night and got lots of sleep. I drank my fluids and took my medicine.

On Saturday we got the call that 3 eggs fertilized and a 4th one was close... the embryologist said things were looking good. He said he would continue to call with the updates.

On Sunday he called and told us we had "2 perfect Embryos" those were his exact words!!!! It absolutely stinks that were are only down to 2 chances for a baby, but he said several times they were "perfect" and Grade 1 (see chart below). So we have 2 Embabies!!!! Thats 2 miracles as of now... we just have to keep the faith that they will continue to grow and be strong like their parents!!

Here is some information about the process our little Embabies are going through and will continue to go through before they will be considered healthy enough to be transferred back inside me. It is a very complicated and overwhelming situation that requires a lot of research to understand, but this is a quick visual to help you see that so much is happening in these 5 days.
The embryo grade refers to how the cells in the embryos look. A grade one embryo, for example, is one in which all of the cells are the same size and there is no fragmentation in the embryo. The system we use to grade embryo appearance is presented in the following table.

Grade 1 through 2.5 embryos seem to have the greatest potential for developing to the blastocyst stage. However, a grade 3 embryo may also be of good quality if its appearance can be explained by asynchronous cell division rather than by poor development. We have published data showing that the number of cells in the day 3 embryo is a better indicator of potential than the grade of the embryo. Therefore, an 8 cell Grade 3 embryo would have better potential than a 4 cell grade 2 embryo on day 3.

Take a look at my monitoring appointments.

Wed 7/19- small follicles could barely be measured
Fri- 7/21- told might have to cancel- have 1 massive growth (probably a cyst), 2 smaller eggs, largest 13mm.
Mon 7/24- Large growth 28mm, 2- 19mm and one 13mm- things looking up told I could retrieve this week.
Wed 7/26- Large growth GONE!- follicles measuring at 23mm, 21mm, 19mm and 13mm- Maybe cyst popped or shrank, no way to tell until they get inside, however my estradiol dropped- so I think cyst disappeared and I may actually have 3 eggs!!- Doctor calls later and says pull trigger tonight and retrieval on Friday am after 14 days of taking medicine.

We pulled the trigger at 12:20am this morning!!! That basically means I took another shot early this am full of 10,000 iu of HCG to "trigger" my body to ovulate in 36 hours. We both fell asleep and woke up in a panic... as you can see from our lovely picture.

My retrieval is scheduled for the 35th hour at 11am on Friday morning. A few people have asked me what exactly happens at the retrieval, well I will tell you what I know as of now...

Chris is going to produce his sample at home. We then drive over the doctor, we are luck as it is only 5 minutes away, we need to arrive at 10:30am. I will need to get changed and prepare for surgery. I will be receiving anesthesia and will be asleep through the process, but basically the doctor will go in with a needle using the ultrasound/camera machines to see and retrieve as many eggs as he can find. We are really hoping for 3, but you never know... there could be less or more... its really freighting to think about! I will wake up a while later and eventually be able to go home... in the meantime the Embryologist will be making our miracles, hopefully all of the eggs that are retrieved will be fertilized with Chris's sperm, then they will become an embryo. Our little miracles will be watched over closely to make sure they are growing and maturing. Once they are 5 days old, a few of their cells will be sent to another lab for genetic testing, while the embryos are frozen, and if they are all "normal" then we can schedule a transfer date in September where the embryo can be put back in my body in hopes they implant... this is basically the whole process... so as you can see tomorrow is a big day, and only the beginning of the process.

Thats the medical end of it... as for me, I'm doing my best to stay relaxed and positive. What is bringing me peace, is that one way or another we will get some answers tomorrow. I have literally given my whole self to this process, so I know I have already done everything that I can to help us make a baby and that NEEDS to be enough... the rest is out of my hands, what is meant to be at this point will be, and I know in my heart Chris and I will be stronger for it and move on to whatever is our next step.

I also bought myself this adorable, positive outfit to wear tomorrow. I figured it will help me feel relaxed, cute and happy, so why not! It also came with a cute, positive note from the designer, which is always nice. Thank you Lottie & Co from Etsy!!

One more thing for my fellow ladies that are just starting the process, this is a picture of my stomach after 10 days of injections, it looks worse than it feels... but it does hurt, I am bloated, nauseas and feel terrible. I am having some difficulty making bowel movements and my stomach is kind of hard... I really hope after tomorrow I will feel better, but I just wanted you to hear and see how it affected me as I know this was a fear of mine going into the process...
